2015 Minnesota Residential Energy Code has been enforced to enhance overall home building performance by its builders and related subcontractors.  Variations can be applied according to its 

codes and implementation.


More advanced building techniques may qualify for enhanced energy savings, incentives and Federal Tax Credits. This includes HERS Ratings,  (Home Energy Rating System), Infrared Testing, Blower Door Testing, Air Duct Leakage Testing, HVAC Systems with constant torque ECM or VSM Type Motors. Especially critical on older furnaces beyond 10 years of age. HVAC system design is a subdiscipline of mechanical engineering, based on the principles of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and heat transfer


Geothermal Heating & Cooling Systems work very efficiently when applied properly.  Much strategy and engineering is generally required as well. Energy ratings are determined by COP, EER and HSPF Ratings. 


During summer cooling, unwanted heat from inside the home is moved or transferred to outdoors, into the ground by circulator pumps and a glycol and water medium. Winter heating allows heat, generally around 50F pumped through pex piping from the ground into the home through a glycol and water solution. 


A closed loop type application is highly recommended. Open loop, or pump and dump applications are banned in many areas. As well, unless waste water is retained for other use, water dumping back into the environment can be up to 1.1 million gallons per year.


When needed, a boost of additional heat is applied to the air stream in home via the heat pump compressor operation. During summer cooling, a copper, coaxial coil loop, called a desuperheater, can retain unwanted heat pumped to outdoors and secure within a holding tank for domestic, potable, hot water. Basically, free hot water for your home. The entirety of heat pump unit is located in the mechanical room. 


There is no SEER rating due to having no outdoor air conditioner.  For example, COP or Coefficiency of Performance is the capacity, ability or output of any (heat pump) heating and cooling unit  in comparison to the amount of useful units of energy (electricity) required.  HSPF or The Heating Seasonal Performance Factor is used to measure the efficiency of any heat pump.  Ratings of 8 or greater considered very efficient.


Heating & Cooling Systems are just a fraction of the overall energy savings and comfort of any home.  Any house must perform as an integrated system of many components all working in harmony together, as one, during the most inclement weather conditions. 


Improving window U-Value efficiency,  U-factor values generally range from 0.18 to 1.25 and are measured in Btu/h. ft² °F. The lower the U-factor, the better the window insulates. At least 18" cellulose loose fill insulation in attic, up to R-50, with adequate roof and soffit area ventilation. Upper ceiling beneath attics shall be sealed and air tight to prevent excessive heat loss and unwanted moisture into attic. Turbine type roof vents are not generally recommended. Any thermal mass and "sealed" vapor barrier shall be applied on the warm side of any wall. Exterior walls above R-21 can influence your overall HVAC building performance factor. Hence, lower any furnace output ratings while saving energy costs. 


Staples connected seams are not effective in the sealing of poly material. Approved manufacturer taping material is best. Non-hardening, manufacturer conforming sealant required at base of floor at vapor barrier. Contact your Andersen, Marvin, Pella, Jeld-Wen window manufacturers for more details.  


Many home inspectors and structural engineers have keen insight and training. Always do your homework, ask the right questions and trust your true instincts before you hire any contractor or proceed on such a large investment.  Building Science is critical towards having a better understanding in home performance.
